Kauai real estate is classified into five zones or districts according to location.
1. Waimea- This is the area Kama'ainas(locals) call "the West side" and it includes the towns Kekaha, Waimea, Makaweli, and Hanapepe. The military base is located in this region. It is also home of Waimea Canyon, "Kauai's Grand Canyon," a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. This climate is dry and ther earth is a deep red clay.
2. Koloa- "the South side" is home to world famous Poipu Beach, and home to the best weather on the island. Towns include Eleele, Kalaheo, Lawai, Omao, Koloa, and Poipu.
3. Lihue- "Central Kauai" includes Hanamaulu, Lihue, and Puhi. Convenient to Kalapaki Bay, and Nawiliwili Harbor where the cruise ships dock. Lihue is home to bigger stores like Costco, Macy's, and Home Depot.
4. Kawaihau- "the East side" has a lot of activity and restaurants. Includes Waipouli, Wailua, Kapaa, Kealia, and Anahola.
5. Hanalei- "the North Shore" features the Princeville Resort, and the towns of Kilauea and Hanalei. Home to "Bali Hai" and with the beautiful greenery and waterfalls, there is a little more rain here.
